Toyota Hybrid Experiences

I'm contemplating a Prius/v or other hybrids to complement and extend the life of my 9-5 wagon. I generally prefer more cargo flexibility than a sedan, but might have to compromise. Even a V90 T5 FWD only gets slightly better efficiency than my 9-5. My use is heavily urban (40-50 miles/day) with some 1,500 mile stints at the moment. With the idle time factored in, the Saab is in the 13 mpg range day to day. That said, efficiency is probably not worth newer car costs or having a second car unless usage will be high enough on both cars. I also don't want to put heavy wear and tear on a new to me car, especially if it's a more expensive car. On the other hand, things like that truck Saab accident posted do happen and gas isn't that costly at the moment. There aren't many options as safe as our Saabs.
What's your experience with hybrids other non-plug-in vehicles (can't plug in and need range)?
