...when my wife drove through a lowering gate 7 years ago when our transponder battery crapped out. Fortunately, the gate was mounted on springs so there was no damage, but I was pretty startled sitting in the passenger seat. Up to that point I thought that that the transponder was RF powered like key cards. We had one of the first EZ-Passes from Maryland even though we live in Virginia because we were traveling up and down the East Coast with kid sports and college. Virginia had a system that was totally incompatible with every other state. Virginia later converted to EZ-Pass, but Maryland was cheaper so I kept my account with them.
Maryland sent us a new transponder for $7.50 and later they were free. I took the old transponder apart and found a large lithium coin cell soldered to a single circuit board. The coin cell was an odd size, but I was able to source one online. The cost for the cell was $12 so it was an easy decision to toss the transponder in the trash bin and get a new one. Maryland eventually just started send out replacements without prompting because a bad transponder meant a shortfall in revenue.
