Jumping up too quickly from desk - let me guess, it was lunchtime? :)
I’ve had a variety of knee conditions, including a torn meniscus, from which I’ve recovered pretty well (at least considering I’m 69). I had a cortisone shot that has worked well, but that was for arthritis, which doesn’t sound like what Scott has. My pain generally has been different than Scott’s, coming downstairs as you describe, and coming over the top on a bicycle pedal stroke, not pushing down. So I won’t try to diagnose Scott’s condition, but wish him luck. Even a minor knee glitch is really annoying, particularly if you’re active.
