There's a tire size calculator on Miata.net that I like to use because it tells how much your speedometer will be off for any given tire size. I Google "Miata tire size calculator" to find it.
It shows that there's a 2% difference in diameter between a 205/65R15 and the stock size, and a relatively huge -4.4% difference between the 205/55R15 tire and the stock size. That's one thing to consider, and also make sure that whatever tire size you're going with will work with the width of the rim (tire manufacturers always specify a rim width range for any given tire size). There's also rubbing to worry about. You can usually go another 10mm wider without issues, but more than that could have your tires rubbing on something.
