If you need an automatic a 9000 would probably be the better bet, assuming that when you talk about the 900 you mean the original "classic" 900 that used a primitive Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic. Be careful about the condition of the transmission in either case since there is little support for them any more. (In particular the company that was the primary go-to, Erikkson Industries, no longer deals with pre-GM Saab transmissions at all.) You'll want to keep the transmission happy with frequent fluid changes.
Bear in mind that the 900 and 9000 are very old cars (decades old) that sold in relatively small numbers. There will be times you have to wait for parts and some parts may be unavailable except used. If you cannot do your own repairs and maintenance it would be best to get on friendly terms with a Saab mechanic in your area.(Unfortunately more and more of the people who worked on the older models are retiring.) It's been my experience that most generic mechanics don't want to work on Saabs due to unfamiliarity and misperceptions.
Be careful about rust if you're in an area with salted winter roads.
My daily driver is a '97 9000 and overall it's been quite reliable, but I do have other vehicles to get around in if it is off the road for repairs.
