The Volvo 850 was designed specifically to compete with the 9000 and is the closest thing I've ever driven. Had a couple of them. The turbo wagon was the best. They built it until fairly recently (as a raised AWD wagon). I'm not sure why you aren't considering a European car as an equivalent to the very European 9000 but the Japanese are building some pretty nice cars these days. As an example, a Honda Accord Touring has a 252 horsepower, turbo four cylinder, is a comparable size, and probably would out handle and outperform a 9000. Cars have come a long way since the 90's. I recently ran across 1998 edition of Road & Track that had a comparison test of a 9-5, A6, and BMW 5 series. My humble CRV is faster and handles better than any of them (0-60 7.5 and .82 on the skidpad). Most of them barely got 20 MPG, I get 30 MPG. Nothing has the personality of a 9000, but there are dozens of cars that will give you equivalent and better functionality. You might want to think about having something else as a daily driver to preserve the 9000.
