They seem to be the closest to Saab as a transition. The SPA Volvos are more complex but the people I've spoken to who own them seem to be happy with them at least if one avoids the first model year or 2. The engine nomenclature is very confusing but all the new ones, T5, T6, and T8 are turbocharged 4 cylinder engines (some with superchargers and or electric motors). Even the t8 in the xc90 is a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine and fuel economy is decent for all. It is particularly important to look for sunroof leaks in some of the models as the weather stripping can gap, and leak, and destroy an expensive module. Southern cars might be more prone to that. We are looking for a family hauler, so xc70 v90cc or xc90. Up here in Canada prices are coming down but there is still a pandemic hangover happening.
Interestingly the Volvo dealer said they advise not to oil spray, that "Volvos don't rust". They do hold up well, but they do rust, just more slowly than some brands. You'd be fine for 10 years I suppose (and that is beyond what a dealer considers the car's lifetime anyway). I guess the downside of oil spray is the mess and the effect on rubber seals. In general, especially for SPA era Volvos, leaking seals are a weak point so maybe his advice is well taken. I can say though that the parts of our Saabs that have rusted at all are the parts that didn't get rust check, and it is like night and day!
