Volvos used to be virtually indestructible, but that changed as they added more electronics and mechanical complexity. That's not picking on Volvo. Same probably could be said about Mercedes and many other brands. I've owned several Volvo wagons, but none newer than a 2011 XC70, which I still have. No major issues, but some expensive repairs here and there. It's a great trip and ski car--comfortable with good power in the Rocky Mountains, though it's a loud ride and gets poor mileage. Home wrenching 2000+ models was always a bit of a challenge compared to my many 9-5s, just from the extent of over-engineering (ie, lots of huge fasteners in the suspension), but that's ultimately a positive. My XC70 has the T6 engine which is such a squeeze that I won't attempt much! Newer platform models though seem to have had electronic issues with the infotainment screens. Some of the engines have documented issues with oil consumption / ring wear, which to be fair is widespread with the push to extract more power and efficiency from smaller displacements. I would look for technical service bulletins on the models you are looking at. It's cliche and a high hurdle these days, but any evidence of regular oil changes is a major plus. Style wise, recent years' Volvos, to me, are one of the few options out there that are still restrained and classy. That said, the XC90s S60s, and V60/70s I've test driven over the last 6+ years though have been noisy, stiff riding, with lacking powertrain refinement. Twice, I ended up buying a used 5 series. If you want a Euro wagon though, Volvo's about it! Good luck; I hope you find the one:)
