Your fight with the scraping bots for me has been the tip of the iceberg of a bigger problem going forward with the web: it is evolving to be a place for machine traffic rather than human traffic. It is making me rethink how I use the web to some degree.
I have a tech background, pretty solid experience coding, knowledge of neutral nets etc so AI as a concept isn't that novel to me. I think the problem is, like the early days of the web most people are just naively jumping in, and most of the use is just pure laziness rather than good use of the technology, and this excessive lazy use comes at a cost (computing power, thus energy, money, but even more so quality). Humans are giving up a lot with this.
Google is going 100% toward indirect search with AI mode in the search bar. What I find is that the Google AI summaries, do just that, a cursory amalgamation of crap off the web, putting too much emphasis on out of context single reddit opinions, meanwhile missing other better information. It is improving, and it is good that it now shows sources. Overall though, I find it takes longer to get the search information I want. I think this is intentional, and I think as the user base becomes increasingly dependent on AI summaries, and indirect search becomes the dominant and eventually the only way of searching, bias will be a huge problem (obviously search bias is an issue today, but it is increasingly problematic if one can't read the original source).
