Manhattan is great. The food in NYC is second to none - especially the sushi. I lived in mid-town for 2 1/2 years. I grew up in Connecticut, but I have lived in several different places - currently in Dallas (blah).
I would recommend NYC to anyone. I would either get an apartment in the city and sell my car (I did not have a car when I lived there - I rented one when I needed it) OR I would live in NJ where the commute is not that bad and the trains are plenty. I will admit though that I felt very claustrophobic on the island after about 6 months. If you like to golf or do anything in the "country" don't live in the city.
Good luck.
