Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it is crowded and not very car friendly. Put your car in storage, find an apartment, and feed your mind.
I've lived all over the US and in Europe: LA, New York, DC, New Orleans, Brussels, London and a short stint in Paris. NYC is the best place in the US anyway for a certain stage of your life. You have to be the kind of person who can appreciate the opportunities available on a personal level. If you are a literati type, in the arts, or otherwise intellectualy inclined, NYC is the best in the states. It blows doors on DC, which is snake pit of lawyers and other faux inteligencia, and really shows LA to be the shallow hell that it is. New Orleans is nice, but stultifying. London and Paris ae WAY better than New York. If I could wrangle another job in these cities I would. I think a Canadian may be repulsed by NYC, but then again, if the advantages of NYC matter to you, then do it.
Also, make sure they pay you over 100k. It is important to be somewhat flush. Don't tell anyone you are Canadian, they may attempt to enslave you (see post below on Canadian slaves).
Just my humble opinion.
