Mike,

I live & grew up just north of NYC. I've visited Novia Scotia a couple of times, & the most similar place I've lived was Newport, RI. I find both places to be very scenic & relaxing. A nice quality of life.

New York City is not relaxing, it is energizing! Serious A-type town, go-go-go! The air is not fresh & invigorating, but the view is breath taking in an architectural sort of way. You will be amazed how much it costs for a 'dump', but then you are in the heart of "it".

If you are going to experience NYC then go for it all out. But if you are not used to it, NYC can be exhausting. I would encourage you to look at some housing stock before you commit. Scary thing is when you are seriously looking, have your checkbook with you as a good apartment will be gone by 'tomorrow'. Live in the city, eat out at the restaurants, experience the cabs & subways. It will last you a lifetime & you will love it or you will hate it. Don't forget the NYC resident income tax!

Commuting to the city from the 'burbs just isn't the same. You end up not wanting to go home & then back in to the city. If there is an other, will they come into the city on their own to meet you? Do you want to stay in the city after work? It can make your 'work day' last 14+ hours as the city & work become one. You will probably be going out with work people after work in the beginning, so it is all 'work time'.

Either way, at the end of the year with housing, commuting, & other costs of living, you will eat up the high salary & not have so much spending money for play (or time probably). I would say go for it, experience NYC. But everything comes with a cost. Living in Rhode Island, Vermont, Florida & Las Vegas I made less money, but I lived better. But NYC feeds a need for A-types that you just can't fulfill anywhere else (IMO).

My 2 cents,

George M
