Richard,
I'd look at the Mazda Protoge, Nissan Sentra and Ford Focus. All 3 can be had with decently powerful engines (the Mazda now has a 2 liter option), and most of the car mags have given them good ratings.
I've always been a Honda fan, but the recent ones, in particular, are not very exciting.
As others have said, another car to consider is Subaru. It definitely has character and, of course, AWD.
I owned a '98 Outback Sport -- the (small) Impreza based wagon -- and it was a good car but didn't have enough power for me. I jumped at the chance to lease a 9-3 in late '99. The Sport did handle very well, however. It was more nimble than the 9-3.
A car to consider is the Impreza RS turbo. It will be here soon in sedan and wagon styles. These cars are kind of flashy (the wagon is less so) but should easily be as quick as a Viggen. They will also handle exceptionally well. The interior will be upgraded over the last model of Impreza, as well.
The turbo RS may be out of your price range, however, since it's expected to be priced somewhat over 25K. I don't know what the lease cost would be.
Good luck.
