Unfortunately Americans have become unbelievably averse to the slightest physical exersion, even walking. Look at all the monster SUV's circling the Wal-Mart/Mall parking lots waiting for a space to open up close to the building. Wouldn't want to walk the 300 ft. from the edges of the parking lot to the building.
I regularly see the same sort of behavior the original poster observed with parents sitting in a running car waiting for the school bus at the end of a 50 ft. driveway. This might be necessary on the coldest days in someplace like Boston, but I live in Georgia! Even the coldest day of the year is not below zero. Adults spend incredible amounts of money to go skiing in weather colder than the coldest day in Georgia. Let the kids experience the thrill of a chilly morning for goodness sakes. And maybe get some exercise. We Americans are the most overweight bunch in the world.
But the traffic designers need to take some discredit for this as well. When was the last time you saw a walkway through a parking lot or a sidewalk in a neighborhood. I know there are some sidewalks in neighborhoods in the North and MidWest, but in the South and West there are no sidewalks to be found. So with traffic moving as fast as it does should we risk having our children walk on the street? The car is a wonderful thing but we need to balance its impact on our cities with the overall needs of society.
