When I visited the US

I was returning home from an extended trip in Europe. We stayed down in Florida for awhile and because we didn't have a car my girlfriend and I decided to walk down to the local shops one day.
Well, imagine our suprise when halfway there the footpath just kinda disappeared. There was just nothing there. And crossing the road was just hell because it was so darn wide. Our American friend later explained that there was no footpath because no-one walked anywhere, except for walking the dog or jogging around the neighbourhood, and that people probably would have looked upon us as being a little strange for walking down the highway (probably an overstatement but you get the idea). Mind you it was quite hot at the time, so I can understand people preferring to drive in cars with aircon...
We were amazed at the size of the roads, and the size of the vehicles on them, and (forgive me) the size of the people.
Yet the same thing is happening down here. People love their big SUVs and driving up real close behind you at traffic lights. They belch diesel everywhere, you can't see past them, and Lord knows what happens when they hit something. I'm starting to feel vulnerable in my 'little' OG900. And why walk to the shops when you can drive? No wonder our kids are becoming obese like in the U.S.
Sorry for the rant...
