I also live in a rural town west of Boston. I taught at both the
high school and college levels. It seems that,in general, parents
and schools have fostered this intervention mentality to an extreme.
Whenever I've had a kid in class that has screwed-up in some manner,
there's always been a confrontation with some intervening guidance
counselor or parent on the kids' behalf, regardless of whether the
kid was guilty or not. The message we're sending to these kids is
don't worry: if you screw-up, I'll be there to bail you out. What
does the kid do when he turns 21? Who's going to be there to bail him
out then? I'm not saying all parents, and all kids are like this, but
I certainly think they're more common than when I grew-up, in the '60's.
I know this doesn't completely 'explain' your question, but it must
surely have some correlation.
