I entered engineering when I got out of the Navy, so I lost all of my study skills. Engineering is extremely hard (I went to Arizona State University for engineering) and very time consuming, and many of the people you meet in other disciplines will not have it as nearly hard as you will. This doesn't mean that you can't have fun, but you'll have to budget your time more than someone who is taking philosophy or premed or english or just about anything else. There won't be as many "Thursday night is bar night" scenarios for you as there will be for others.
Personally, I've left the field of engineering because the study of engineering was incredibly "fun" to me, but I found the practice of engineering to be boring. I was a software/hardware programmer and designer, and I just found it boring. I found that you basically stop learning as much when you're performing engineering. This doesn't mean that you'll find it boring, however.
Also, engineering gives you other opportunities. For instance, the combination of an MBA and an engineering degree can be very powerful. Personally, I have an MSEE and a law degree and am a practicing patent attorney. So, even if you decide that engineering isn't for you, you still have a number of options. Personally, I thought that engineering was harder than law school because the work load was higher and the concepts were harder. In law school, all you do is read and the concepts are pretty easy to fathom once you get the "system" down.
