Having lived here in Alaska for most of my life, I will say that the long hours of daylight are pretty nice, especially if it's sunny. Right now it's 1042 PM and it's still light outside, despite the clouds and rain. We went to the Arctic Circle for the solstice, actually 4 days early but it didn't matter cause it was bright braod daylight when we went to bed at 1 in the morning. You won'r believe how much work and play you can fit into 18 hours of daylight.
The long dark of winter gives you a chance to catch up on the reading, writing, interior projects, etc. However, on a moonlit winter night with a decent snow cover, it will be bright enough to go skiing or just take a walk in the crisp air. Watching the northern lights is another uniquely northern experience.
We just sent our exchange student back to Germany-she spent almost a year here and she loved it here-but she was ready to get back to her family. Europe sounds like a great place to visit, but my Alaskan outlook on life probably asigns me to strictly tourist roles in Europe-at this point I'm quite the crusty individualist and fear that European rules and regulations would unduly inhibit me. But hey your young and you should see how the other half lives if you can swing it. And the best Heavy Metal being made these days is coming from Sweden-Narnia, Hammerfall, etc. As long as you don't crawl into the bottle during the winter....
