In my opinion, a career in automotive sales generally is not that appealing. Attracting & retaining quality sales staff is probably just as hard, if not more so than technicians.
Having working in auto sales for a period of time, I watched many enthusiastic and decent people churned through the doors with bitter disappointment .Most of the reasons can be attributed to dealer greed. Typically you are expected to work 9 to 9, 5 to 6 days a week, which in itself would drive most stable employees away. If most dealer principals could get away with being open 24/7 they would, it costs them very little to extend sales hours as the salesperson is not paid to be there and I’m sure that most manufactures would support this as well.
The combination of the instability of not receiving a steady pay check, long thankless hours, spotty if any retirement plans and frankly often dealing with a hostile (with good reason) and suspicious general public quite often makes this job nothing more than a stepping stone to decent employment.
So who is to blame?...look to the manufactures, do they really care about the people representing them to the consumer? No, should they begin to make investments in the strengths, security and respectability of these people? Yes, but I doubt things will ever improve enough to make any automotive sales position attractive.
