I bought a DVD player, didn't get the insurance, and brought it home. It was DOA. I took it back the next day, expressed my dissatisfaction, and walked out with another new one. No protection program. You figure most consumer electronics carry about a 1 year warranty from the factory. If it goes for a year, it's probably going to last quite a few years...
Same with a washer/dryer set I bought. 1 week into owning it, the dryer made horrible noises. I called GE/Whirlpool/Whoever and they sent a tech out to adjust it. Not Sears (or did I get it at best buy?), but the manufacturer's service crew. No problem.
That insurance at best buy is nothing more than raw profit and a scam. I find what I want and scoot out of that area of the store before a sales rep finds me. They always want to "write you up" and then try to browbeat you into buying the protection. I don't want to hear "Well, it might break, so you should get it". I want to hear "it's a fine product, it would last you for years, but it does carry a 1 year guarantee in case of mfr defects" I guess in my mind they're just under telemarketers in terms of the annoyance factor.
But, they keep prices reasonable on some consumer electronics, so they're just trying to boost the bottom line...
