I'm soon to be Dr. Pogeybait. I am finishing my doctoral thesis in Immunology in Massachusetts. As a graduate student I receive a research fellowship, health benefits (not complete, but OK), and a complete tuition waver. Sounds nice I suppose, but being a slave for 6 years with no end in sight can be depressing at times.
I'm only familiar with doctoral programs in biomedical research sciences. The laboratories are typically funded by the NIH and other research agencies. Master's programs typically do not include these benefits and cost 25K and up (not counting living expenses). Several of my classmates (there were only a few of us) "opted out" after completing a series of qualifying exams that officially make you a "doctoral candidate" after 2 years. In doing so, the school gives them a masters, but I've heard employers frown on "drop-outs."
What field are you interested in?
