Hi Zeke
Your point is well taken! Ed schools have long been short on content... recent developments are working to change that. At Boston College, our Science Ed Ph.D. students can be jointly administered by College of Arts and Sciences faculty (like myself - I am a biologist) and focus on deep content issues. One of my Ph.D. students arrives with a Master's in biology and is doing radiotelelemetry/molecular biology studies of urban and rural coyotes. He has publications in bio journals and is turning this study into a model collaboration and curriculum for inner city high schools through our Urban Ecology Institute (http://www.urbaneco.org). We have over 400 high school students from impoverished neighborhoods in the Boston Metro area doing real science in their own school yards...
We desparately need talented young scientists to work at the interface between basic research and public education. My hope is that our students can help erase the stigma of an "Ed" degree.
Cheers,
Eric
