Why constrain yourself with an Ed. degree?....

I've seen the Ed. program from a mathematicians'/engineers'
perspective and it isn't pretty. Here in MA, the schools of ed.
don't come near being as rigorous as engineering or pure/applied
math. A person who wants to teach math or science will end up
taking more ed'n 'theory' classes than math or science classes.
And the math and science classes are usually different, read easier,
than what the math or science major would normally take. I would
consider, at least, doing a M.S. in the subject area - either math
or m.e./physics - that you plan on teaching. It's great that you want
to teach, but there's no 'natural' law that says only teachers with
education degrees are good teachers. Many of the courses one
has to take for an ed. degree are pretty absurd - I liken them to the
type of courses one takes when they're doing an MBA. A lot of it
is pure psycho-babble. Do your students a favor - get as thorough
an education as you possibly can in the subject matter you plan
to teach. You can always read the psycho-babble theories on
education at your own leisure. Use your experience as a student,
and take note of the methods employed by the 'good' teachers
you've experienced. That will serve you much better than any
theory course one gets in schools of ed'n. I'm sure you could
still do a PhD in ed. if you had an M.S. in the subject matter you
wanted to teach. It'll be a lot harder doing an M.S. in math or
physics/me, but it's been my experience that anything worth
doing is usually pretty difficult.
