Yesterday at the John Moss Tech Session held at the Saab Training Center in Wallingford, CT they had a partially disassembled 9-3 engine on display. One of the Saab techs provided us with an overview, and some key points re the engine and the 9-3 overall were:
- the head of the Saab engine shares almost no parts with the head on the Saturn version of this engine.\
- cartridge oil filter is used...easy to access, sits right on top of the engine.
- synthetic oil is the factory recommendation...ECU is programmed to monitor various factors re engine usage (rpm level, # of cold starts, etc) and it will display a "change engine oil" message when it determines that it is time to change the oil. Owner can reset this message without special tools. Estimate is that the car will display this message in the 6,000-8,000 for the "average driver."
- New 9-3 has a total of 30 different computers in the car.
- engine oil capacity is 6 quarts.
- water pump is chain driven off the balance shaft chain. Need a special tool to attach to the balance shaft chain sprocket on the water pump, then detach the pump from this sprocket and remove the pump while this special tool hold the sprocket in place and maintains the tension on the chain.
- engine timing cover is removable without disturbing the head gasket.
- power steering pump and vacuum pump are driven off the camshaft with no rubber belt drive involved.
- Only difference in the higher output Arc and Vector motors is the ECU software and the turbocharger. The engine itself is the same as in the Linear model.
-Direct ignition is comprise of four separate coil packs, each of which is sparately replaceable. Therefore you do not need to replace an entire di cassette, but only the affected coil pack.
- Auto transmission has feature where you can manually shift it at bottom of shift gate. Display of gear engaged is on the dash. Manual shift feature eliminates the need for the Sport Mode and the Winter Mode on the auto trans.
- Dash board display module pod on top of dash with radio and SID info is a very nice feature that avoids having to take the driver's eyes off the road.
- Trunk size is very generous.
Overall the car and the engine were most impressive.
