In NINES #255 (iirc) we showed detailed photographs of a cutaway "Global 4" engine on the stand at the 2002 NAIAS (Detroit Auto Show). We pointed out the features discussed below and concluded from many of the design details that Saab engineers were heavily involved in the design.
In NINES #260 (mailed last Friday) we have **color** photos of a cut-away engine in full Saab trim, along with a laundry list of what's different between the Saab and the rest of the incarnations (to date): forged crank, die cast (vs. sand cast) head, unique valves, pistons, rods, not to mention the turbocharger, and mention of the front mounted oil cooler. Note that one difference in the oil "capacity" between the 9-5 engine and the new 9-3 is the 9-5 leaves a liter or so in the oil cooler when you drain the sump, while the new 9-3's cooler is vertical, so it drains out.
Also note that the 9-3 cooler is oil-water, so it warms the oil in winter for better lubrication and less moisture accumulation.
How comfortable are the Saab engineers with the new engine? When they built their direct gasoline injection (SCC) prototype, they used the new engine, not the old one!
