Do you think the sleeves were wet or dry? As you would guess from the name, wet sleeves have direct contact with the coolant, dry sleeves do not. Typically, wet sleeves have o-rings at the top and bottom to seal them to the block. I seem to recall that Peugeot used wet sleeves with o-rings on their 4 cylinder engines with pretty good reliability.
