Question about the 9-3 engine block Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Mon, 4 Nov 2002 09:25:45 In Reply to: 9-3 engine on display at Tech Session, paul de k, Sun, 3 Nov 2002 15:45:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One thing that I have been searching for is for information about the new engine block. It's supposed to be all aluminum, and I was wondering what GM was doing for the cylinder bores. Are they using an alloy with a high silicon content and then acid etching the cylinder walls? I've never heard any mention of iron sleeves, and of course the phrase "all aluminum" would seem to rule out that possibility.
The reason I'm asking is, talk to a high mileage Saturn owner and you will finde that some of them have no problems, but there are an alarming number of owners dumping a quart of 10W-50 in their cars every 700 miles because of excessive bore wear. And, with that kind of block, there is no boring or honing possible.
And of course, everyone older than about 45 new someone in the 70's that owned a Chevrolet Vega, GM's first shot at what was to be an all aluminum engine. They had to switch to an iron head to hold the engine together, and the aluminum block would score at the slightest provication.
