You know what? It still seems so bad. I spent a few weeks in England a year or so ago and really enjoyed it. We rented a car, drove around the south end, and never once did our fuel costs seem outrageous. We were able to walk to most everywhere we wanted to be, and of course in London there were plenty of options for mass transit. In the nearly three weeks we had the car I think we maybe did 200 miles? I drive that on an almost weekly basis here.

I would gladly keep the car parked if mass transit, walking, or biking was an option. I love driving, but commuting is hardly driving. I'd be more than willing to let someone else ferry me through morning congestion if I could. Unfortunately, light rail doesn't go this direction from my house. The nearest bus stop from there is about 1.5 miles, and the nearest bus stop from work is probably another half mile to a mile, although I've never seen a bus around here so maybe I'm mistaken. Point is, it would take me 20 minutes walking and then about 35 minutes on the bus itself to get to and from work everyday. Two hours on a bus or I can drive 30 minutes. Hmmm. Not much of a choice, is it?

And that really is my problem. If I knew my gas taxes and vehicle taxes and such were going into a fund to get me some mass transit, I'd be TRULY happy and very willing. The idea of light rail criss-crossing all over Sacramento is a great idea in my mind. But that's not what happens at *all*. Those fees go to some big pot which will probably never be used to build such infrastructure, and a real fear I have is that eventually getting to and from work will be a very major part of my monthly budget, as lawmakers continue to tax me more and more for something that I *must* do. This is a very real and very serious problem in my mind, though perhaps I am alone...
