If you change your oil by the odometer or by the calendar, it would be a miracle if you "hit it right". The choice is among being ultra conservative, risking your engine, or engaging in a rigorous program of oil monitoring by sampling and laboratory testing. The last choice only works if your driving habits are regular and pridictable. If you drive in the city, short trips, one season, then hit the open road the next, your oil monitoring based on one driving regime is useless in predicting the other.
Saab's interest is in getting the car through the end of its lease with minimal damage, in a condition that if the next owner provides proper maintenance, he won't be facing a dead engine in 1 year or two. Hence the maintenance schedule *that they pay for*. Almost everyone exposes his vehicle to "extreme service" for at least part of the time.
The on-board oil monitoring in the 9-3 Sport Sedan eliminates the guesswork, gives the owner accurate indication of the end of life of the oil in the sump - PROVIDED the owner uses the oil that the monitor is calibrated against (or better). The Saab monitor is extra owner-friendly in that it shows the estimated life remaining - allowing the long term or concientiuos owner the ability to inject a suitable degree of conservatism into the process.
Absent the on-board oil monitoring, I'll go the overkill route. I'm keeping my Aero until they pry the steering wheel from my cold, lifeless hands.
Or until the Saab Combustion Control V-6 Turbo, 3.2L 9-5 Aero comes down the pike ...
Yeah, we'll be talking about that in the next NINES ...
