SUV query

Posing a question to you all,
A new ecological research project may prompt me to sell my Saab and become a two SUV family for some time. This is a bit disheartening, as I have gotten to love my '02 Aero (Aftermarket wheels/tires/exhaust, etc.) - but I'll be back.
Anyway, I am looking for advice on experience that you folks may have had with SUV's in trying to balance difficult off-road duties with on-road driveability. Because I use my trucks in severe off-road service (deep sand on barrier beaches, rugged powerline trails, etc.) I have always purchased SUV's with low range transfer cases, lots of wheel travel, etc. I currently own a '01 Mitsubishi Montero Limited - which is very capable - but larger than I need as a second vehicle. I have owned Toyota 4Runners/Tacomas and Isuzu-Honda/Rodeos/Passports. I am looking for a truck that is relatively small (nimble) and is powered by six cylinders (not eight) and still has real off-road capacity.
I am tempted by the Acura-Honda/MDX-Pilot, but the lack of low range is off-putting (but the USLEV rating is extraordinary for a truck). Anyone out there have experience with that truck, or perhaps:
Jeep Grand Chrokee, Nissan Pathfinder (Xterra is rugged - but none to comfortable on my long 82 mile commutes), Land Rover Freelander, etc.
This board has a tone of experience that I hope to tap into...
Best,
Eric
