For $40K and in the year 2003 I would expect to be able to push a button to engage 4WD. Not so with the Land rover.
My Trooper is on the beach down the Cape and on the South Shore at least 3 times a week in the summer. My wife takes it and she inevitably gets into deep sand and has never had any issues. I did have an issue when taking it in deep sand but I had original tires and 60K miles on it. My own fault not the truck. The Discovery is great in the sand/snow and it seems to be the family car of uses where I come from. Most all other SUV's have some kind of quadra-track, torque on demand, etc..
My SUV of choice (soley on looks now as I have never driven in one) would be the Land Rover DEFENDER. Mainly because very few of them are around.
