Studying abroad in London next semester..couple of ??'s

Hi guys-
I am studying in London next semester, Ball State University (Muncie, IN) is paired with Oxford and Westminister and I had a few questions.
I plan on purchasing a laptop here, an iBook to be precise and I was wondering what you would recommend. Everything I have heard about US laptops in longterm use in other countries scares me, i.e. smoking converters, laptops getting fried. What would you guys recommed? A good adapter? Contacting Apple and purchasing a UK power cord?
Second, and most important. What are some cool car related things I can do while I am there? Rallies, museums, etc. I am free to travel wherever once I am there. I have classes on Mondays and Tuesdays, field trips on Wed and from then on out I am on my own. I am also give a 12 day Fall Break so any cool suggestions would be great.
Sorry for the rambling...September isn't going to come soon enough!
