I was also abroad for a semester (Paris though).

Computer:
Buy the docking station, for the small extra cost it provides a good base protection. I have an IBM, so can't comment on yours exactly, but the whole year I was abroad I had no problem, the computer comes with an internal converter, adaptable to both 220 and 110. If anything happens, the warranty will cover you in London also. I had to have my HD changed, and they were very helpful.

Cars:
I did rent automobiles a couple of times. UK and Ireland, no problems driving, even though they drive on the "wrong" side, they should follow Sweden's example and shift overnight.
UK has great Touring and rally car races, alot of fun, especially seeing cars that are on the road.
Formula1 is also an experience that I wouldn't miss, just wish Schumacher would let go of the crown.

TIP:
While in London, try to take some weekends to explore other places. Scotland, Ireland (both speak english somewhat), but don't rule out Continental Europe, as London is a nice hub, and with the prices of flights increasingly dropping (see no-frill airlines - easyjet) alot can be done while based there. In my year abroad, a couple of friends and I did all of Western Europe, Poland, Hungary, Czeck, Turkey, Greece, and Morrocco all for substantially less than basing from the US. Extended weekend trips are easy to plan, and cost effective (I remember leaving Paris Thursday night, sleeping on train, going to ____________, and hoping the train again on Sunday to make it to class Monday morning).
ahhhh, memories.
