Nissan has some hellacious product available currently. They took the performance road, and it seems to be working. They are also appealing to the glutenous side of everyone by using 20" wheels, oversized/flared fenders, lots of electronic gadgets, and huge engines. Of course, that's not our style. We're much more subdued than that.
As far as Saab goes, we're coming up. We have product in the pipeline that will work. Remember, we as Saabers like things that aren't necessarily like by the the majority of consumers. We're a far edge of a spectrum, and from a retail standpoint I see Saab moving in the right direction. I might not like some of the compromises being made, but, hey, when was the last time you made an omelet without breaking a few eggs?
I can't say enough for what Debra Kelly-Ennis is doing for Saab USA, the product is more readily available, and our marketing has loosened up enough to allow the individual dealers to tailor advertising to their particular market (something that was never remotely available, even just two years ago). No one can say that the current 9-3 program isn't huge for the brand. Do you remember ever seeing something like this in the past? All I can say is: Huge! It's huge.
Also, I'm going to repeat it again. Debra is in charge of Saab USA not, Saab AB. She has nothing to do with engineering and production. Saab USA is a seperate entity, and controls sales and distribution for the US. We have a lot of clout because we are Saab's largest market, and she is using that to our advantage. Requiring Saab to use gadgets and features that are a must in the US market; things that the Europeans think that we're crazy for needing. The fact of the matter is, Americans are 'hot dogging' people that love to push the envelope in regards to everything. We love to think that we can have more of something than we could ever use. Whether anyone agrees with the concept, they must agree that this concept exists, and is the majority in this country. People want big cars, and fast cars for not a lot of money, and for the most part don't care about the consequences. Who are we to tell them no? If we don't cater to them, someone else will. Like maybe... Infiniti?
Bring on the 9-2 and the 9-7! I don't care if any of us buys another Saab, as long as the rest of America does. I'll be happy to sell my soul to wastefulness and glutony if it meant that I could ensure the continuation of the products that I have grown to love. Of course, we'll all still have a Saab to drive, and unfortunately these new 'beasts' will continue to make it possible for us to drive them.
We have to change. There are only two cars that haven't changed since their conception. Morgan and Norton, but when was the last time you saw one of those, and who wants a car with a wood frame anyhow?
Cheers,
Brian.
