A quote from your post: "cargo and passenger space (again, this is available in wagons and minivans but people seem to prefer them in SUV form) ".
I'm guessing the reason people prefer SUV's is because of the horrible fear of owning the "Family Truckster". We've all seen National Lampoon's Vacation, and all have horrid memories of a mint green station wagon with wood paneling and hubcaps. My wife has told me on numerous occasions, that she thought the Aero Wagon was cool for a wagon, but over her dead body would she ever drive a wagon. She'd rather live with a sedan than drive a wagon, but at the same time is patiently waiting for the 9-7 before she trades in the sports car.
Cheers,
Brian.
