My guess is that they sold the car to a "wholesaler" as you mentioned. That guy A. Didn't change the title into his name because that costs money and B. he was running around (or his kid) with a dealer tag. That would explain why the DMV record was still in your name.
The dealer really isn't at fault. When they sell a car to a wholesaler/used car dealer, they sign the back of the title so the wholesaler can transfer ownership into his name. Many wholesalers don't do this since it costs money, they just find another used car lot to sell the car too. This is called skipping a title.
My guess is the dealer will put the arm on the wholesaler or will stop doing business with him/her.
Stay on top of it though.
