Gas water heaters have always cost me less per gallon of hot water than electrics, Electricity is one of the poorest (least efficant) ways to provide any heating. BUT! An electric heating unit will almost always outlast a gas unit, so the economics of replacing it more often has to come into play. The gas/electric call will depend on the energy/repalcement cost of each which varies much in different areas. As for on demand, they will save energy IF (big IF) the people using it are economically minded. This rules out having teenage girls that think the ideal length of time for a shower is till the hot water runs out (it doesn't). And a lot of homes do not have enough electric capacity to run an on demand electric, as the size required will be determined by the minimum inlet water temperature. Your in Minnesota EH? Cold water in means a bigger capacity demand unit. Ie; you may need 400 amp service to the house to have an electric one.
Sooo. the most economical operating cost would be enviromentally sensitive people with an on demand gas heater Willing to replace it every few years.
