the water heater in our house was put in in 79. We moved in in 92 and I figured it would go "any day now." It is a gas 40 gal A.O Smith and is still perking.
Here's why I think it has lasted so long. It has an unusual hook up feeding one of the bathrooms from a pipe "teed" into the drain spigot on the bottom of the tank. So every time my son takes a shower, the bottom of the tank gets cleaned out. I suspect that since few people actually drain out the junk at the bottom of the tank on the recommended intervals, this is way to beat the system.
