I helped my grandson buy his '19 Civic and was so blown away when I drove it that I traded my Jeep in on a Honda a week later (though I opted for a CRV). It was incredibly roomy (as much so as any Saab or Volvo I've owed), well-built and loaded with everything you could asked for plus adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, emergency stop, etc. All of it is standard on every car. It has a sweet 1.5 liter 4 cylinder (the base engine is a 2.0 NA) and can be had with a manual and a hatch back. I'm not sure how far back that generation goes but used ones are out there. As for buying something for $5000, at that price point you have to buy cars of opportunity--ie. the best, lowest mileage car of any kind you can find. Best bang for the buck is the cars no one wants--"grandma" cars, minivans, odd ball brands.
