In my experience, you can never go wrong with a Honda or even better an Acura. I bought new a 2000 Civic Si and if I hadn’t gotten rear ended shortly after I bought it (84 y/o lady didn’t even stop who didn’t even remember the accident per the police report) I might still have it today. I have also owned a 1994 Integra and my husband has only had 3 cars - a 1997 Acura CL, a 2007 Accord, and now a 2015 Acura TLX. The first two were run up to 200k plus with no major issues and he is not as much of a stickler when it comes to maintenance as I am.
If you look long and hard for a low mileage older model you’ll certainly get your money’s worth(the Integra I bought had about 30k miles and I think I bought it in about 2005). And they all perform well and are fuel efficient.
And I agree about 5k cars - especially in today’s market. My sister was looking in that price range and was lucky to find a grandma 2003 Lincoln Continental that is in nice shape.
The only downside for me with Hondas - the sedans and coupes anyway- is getting in and out. They are not made for 6 foot 200 lb Americans. That is one of the reasons I like my Saab ( and my Grand Cherokee).
Goid Luck!
