I would either get a used Viggen or a the new A3. The Viggen is so unique and a really great car - truly one of a kind. The new A3 is a good car for the money. When the 9-3 sportback comes out it will be some good competition and maybe thats something to wait for. Skip the VW. I drove the 9-2X when it first came out. That car is quick. Handled great - overall good package for the money, but you are right about feeling like a Subby.
So my final vote would be Viggen:)
