...All the force is absorbed by the front end. A rigid cage in the passenger compartment with front and rear crumple zones was pioneered by Mercedes. The front crumples to absorb energy. The rigid compartment protects the driver. This is the same principle behind Indy car racer cockpits. Thise cars are light and yet most drivers walk away from 150MPH + crashes.
It is no surprise that the German Smart Cars are so good in a crash. The Germans pioneered the science.
