You are stating that the ~1' deep crumple zone of the Smart car is as effective in protecting the occupants as the say ~3' or more crumple zones found in regular cars like a 9-5, or a Mercedes sedan, etc. This logically makes no sense and is incorrect.
Assuming the passenger compartment remains intact (which it does in the Smart car), the goal of the rest of the car is to reduce the forces of decelleration that are imparted to the occupants. If the car hits something at 70 mph, the crumpling of the car and the action of the seatbelts and airbags are what does this. The more crumpling there is, the longer the amount of time you have to go from 70 to 0, thus decreasing the forces drastically.
Your argument, taken to it's logical conclusion, would also suggest that a motorcyclist's head would be fine if he ran into a brick wall, so long as his helmet stayed intact. Unfortunately a motorcycle helmet only has 1-2" of "crumple zone", so the decelleration from hitting a solid object is quite severe, and can cause nasty brain injuries.
