I would bet the 3' crumple zone in a 3000 lbs car would be comparably effective to the 1' crumple zone in a 1000 lbs car. The bigger crumple zone is needed to handle the bigger mass and resultant kinetic energy. I bet the time spent in the crumpling process versus amount of crumpling is not linear and probably pretty comparable.
I agree nobody would want to hit a solid object at speed with a motorcycle helmet being the only protection. Probably neck/spinal injuries would be more apt to happen then brain acceleration. However, look at how effective a helmet is in baseball against a line drive or a fast pitch, or a helmet in the workplace against falling tools or ice. These are pretty lightweight too compared with a motorsports helmet. Bicycle helmets are even more lightweight and seem to be quite effective for their intended use.
