why limit your choices to Volvo and Subie? Lots of cars will fill the bill. Put on 4 good snow tires, make sure the heater works and you're good to go.
As for Volvo's and Subies...
Volvos have average reliability (at best) and are not all that cheap to fix. And ask your local AAMCO tranny shop what the Volvo AWD system does after about 100K miles. If you buy one with the original tranny, have about $5K set aside to do yours.
Subies are nice if you're short (under 5'8") and don't really need the back seat for humans. Partly out of curiosity, we test drove 05 and 06 Outback wagons about this time last year. They go great, especially the turbo, and felt fine for 20 minutes or so, then had us wishing we were back at the dealer, in my 9000, a bar...anyplace but the Subie. The seats are too hard and the ride is busy, jiggly and truckish. I think they might be okay for local driving but I sure wouldn't want to take one on an 8 hour trip. And, as my wife pointed out, there are seats for 4 but not enough luggage room for 4. They are small inside, even though they are about the same length as my 9K or a 9-5.
Then we went to the Saab dealer to look at a pre-owned 9-5 wagon. There is a night and day difference. The Suby is priced like a Saab but is not in the same league. All Subies have going for them is the illusion that AWD is essential.
A colleague who is 5'7" (and his wife is 5'2") think their's is just fine. But they've had Subies for so long they've forgotten what real cars are like.
