The one benefit the Subaru has over the VW is the AWD if you live in an area where AWD would be a benefit. The down side is that the fuel economy suffers. It will likely be more reliable too.
I don't think the Jetta wagon is out yet but if not, it should only be another few weeks or so. The _major_ appeal of the Jetta is the diesel version that will be offered. Great fuel economy and outstanding resale value. I repeat, outstanding resale. :-)
Between the two, I would go for a diesel Jetta.
I assume, seeing this is a Saab site, you have looked at the 9-3. Tough to beat a 9-3 Aero Combi; it's practical and fun at the same time. Plus it has to be one of the better looking wagons on the market right now. I'll bet you could get a screaming deal on a remaining new '07 (if you can find one).
