When you think you might be buying a mid-sized or tall wagon, you'll be surprised to find out they often don't hold much stuff or provide much space for people. For instance, the 72.3 cubic ft of the 9-3 SC is more than a Ford Edge SUV. Of course the shape of the space matters, (especially for people), but most people like to lay things flat in the cargo area, not stack it. In that case, taller vehicles aren't as good. If you're used to the space of the Mercedes E, you may have to go with a used 9-5 wagon or else end up with a guzzling mid-sized SUV, or guzzling V6 Audi. The Passat with the 4 cyl turbo would be a decent alternative too. Since you're on a budget and will probably buy used, the poor resale value of the 9-5 works in your favor.
