Be sure you go for a long test drive in the Suby. I thought it was OK for 20 minutes, but my wife and I took it out for an hour and after 30 minutes were looking forward to getting back to the dealer. We found the seats to be too hard and the ride jiggly. We do 4-hour runs to Maine and other longish trips (12-13 hours) and the Suby would be a torture chamber. It's also pretty small, especially if your wife is used to the E-class. We went with a pre-owned 9-5 Linear SportWagon.

For us, the 9-3 SportCombi was too small, but it depends on your needs. The 9-5 wagon is also the family car, so the room is fine. I'd consider a 9-3 SC as my own car when I give up my 9000.

I like the Jetta and also the Passat. I think both are coming out with diesels, which is nice for fuel economy. I worry about VW maintenance costs, though.

You might look at the Volvo V50. Our best friends just got one and it's pretty nice. AWD and a turbo 5 cylinder. Goes good. Ride is OK, but not as good as a Saab, IMHO. Still a decent car at a reasonable price.

How about a 3-series Bimmer?
