Often the newest design wins by default. The complaint against a 9-5 is the the design is 10 years old now. The Volvo V70 is brand spankin' new and based on the S80 chassis.
Having said that I'd still rather a 9-5......
The Subarus aren't so bad if you aren't used to all the techno luxury touches of the 9-5 or something similar. Even top of the line Subys are simple, boring cars though much better looking lately.
VW has come on strong too, the Passat wagon is also dynamite, but still give me a turbo four in the Saab. VW/Audi interiors are the class of the field, including Benz and BMW and all the techno luxury features are available, most standard, vs the Suby
The new 3 Series is dynamite too, and god bless the folks who can afford a 5. And an X3 or X5 is a very, very sporty SUV/tall SportWagon.
All the service gripes about a 9-5 don't even compare in magnitude to the price of old Benz service. Old Saabs are cheap and reliable by comparison.
