and that the car hasn't been in a flood or had rodents residing inside, etc.
What's the worst case scenario? Obviously it could need an engine or transaxle. Or both. But it probably doesn't.
Treat it like any other car purchase: Get it inspected. Find out what it needs, what it will cost to do, and make the decision. Suppose it needed $5K in work? You'd still be ahead of the value of the car.
I'd jump on a 911 for $5K as long as it didn't need major stuff. They are truly wonderful cars, even if you only wind up keeping it a few years.
